F. Inge Johnstone

F. Inge Johnstone

Of Counsel

Inge Johnstone represents insurance policyholders and people in serious personal injury cases. As Of Counsel with MSB’s Alabama office, Inge brings decades of experience handling insurance, commercial, consumer, business, and personal injury litigation from both sides of the courtroom.

Inge started his legal career in 1998 at a corporate defense firm. In that position, he represented insurance companies and large corporations in complex commercial litigation. He also oversaw litigation for a large healthcare company, representing it in more than 70 cases nationwide. His early experience provided insight into how companies and insurers approach litigation, evaluate risk, and defend claims.

Inge later joined a plaintiffs’ class-action firm where he handled complex litigation. While in that role, he frequently traveled to take depositions around the country and participated in court hearings. He was also part of a team that handled a defamation trial against the NCAA, which lasted six weeks and resulted in a $5 million jury verdict. His work also included cases involving one of the largest data breaches in the country, mass tort litigation, and a homeowner’s insurance fire claim.

Inge founded his own firm in 2008, where he focused on representing policyholders. The first case he handled solo was a fire-loss claim against Allstate involving interpretation of the policy’s exclusion for “vandalism and malicious mischief.” Over the years that followed, he brought cases on behalf of individuals and businesses against insurance companies and handled personal injury matters, consumer claims, and business litigation.

Inge’s policyholder work has included claims involving:

  • Homeowners insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Short-term health insurance
  • Individual disability income insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Errors and omissions coverage
  • Commercial property policies
  • Commercial general liability policies
  • Directors and officers policies
  • Boiler and machinery policies

Inge has significant trial experience in both state and federal courts and frequently writes and lectures on insurance topics. He genuinely enjoys the details of legal work, including reading case law and insurance policies.

Inge’s commitment to representing policyholders is personal. His grandfather had an uninsured ship-supply business in the 1950s that burned to the ground, forcing him to start over. That story shaped the way Inge thinks about people who trusted an insurance company to be there when disaster struck, only to have a claim denied or underpaid.

Inge’s approach to the practice of law was shaped by his family. His grandfather emphasized the importance of keeping your word, while his father, who served on the Alabama Supreme Court, modeled the importance of doing the right thing even when it is difficult.

When not practicing law, Inge enjoys spending time with his wife and his boys, playing guitar, salsa dancing, cooking ribs on his Big Green Egg, and reading, writing, and speaking on personal development.
